Why Move to Piedmont?

In a word . . . lifestyle. Piedmont offers small town charm surrounded by big city living. Unlike other neighborhoods in Oakland, Piedmont is its own incorporated city. As such, it supports its own fire department, police department, park and recreation department and school district. Therefore, Piedmont can lay claim to some of the best schools in Northern California, the fastest responding fire and police department in the state, and the best tulip display this side of Holland!

With approximately 3000 households, Piedmont is a community where children walk to school with their friends along tree-lined streets. It is a community where neighbors watch out for one another and come together for block parties to celebrate the seasons. It is a community that sponsors concerts in the park, movie night under the stars, a tree-lighting ceremony in the center of town, and the best little Fourth of July parade to be found. Piedmont is a community full of history and nostalgia but one that is also evolving and looking forward to the future as it celebrates is 100-year centennial.

Founded after the great 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, Piedmont still continues to attract many young families leaving the city but wishing to retain close proximity to San Francisco. For those working in the city, the casual carpool offers a quick and easy ride across the bridge, as does BART – the Bay Area Rapid Transit System – delivering its passengers downtown in less than twenty minutes.

With a new school bond that was overwhelming passed by a whopping 83% of the voters in 2006, our schools will soon be undergoing earthquake retrofitting and in some cases, new design and construction altogether. The community pool will also undergo a transformation in the next few years as well, expanding its size and capacity while offering a better facility for the high school swim and water polo teams. The Parks and Recreation department continues to explore the possibility of expansion of our playing fields as the soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, football and rugby programs continue to grow and expand, attracting kids of all ages. And with summers that hover in the mid-80’s, Piedmont may have the best weather in the entire east bay.
