Every week, COMPASS begins our Tuesday morning meetings with coffee, breakfast goodies, and a brief discussion from our Origin Point Rep who speaks to the overall health of the market, the interest rates, and the unexpected hurdles that Buyers must jump to qualify for preapprovals. (For those unclear on the concept, you cannot make a legitimate offer without a preapproval letter in place.) Understanding what you can - and cannot - afford is the first piece of the puzzle. This week, Fif Ghobadian led us through the frank world of underwriting and loans. (Thank you, Fif.)

From pensive to crabby, I'm at my wit's end as Cliff and I pull together our taxes at the request of our beleaguered and very patient CPA.
"We really need your figures this week," his assistant said, "or we won't make the October deadline." Fair enough. For a woman who HATES procrastinating, dealing with Federal and State income taxes is my least favorite chore of the year, and one I will happily put off until the very last minute. (It's the last minute!) I'm feeling pensive this week having just received news of a family friend's death. Ila was 92, so by most accounts, she lived a full and active life, but her passing was unexpected just the same. To be more precise, Ila was my mother's best friend and our families camped together every summer throughout our childhood. In many respects, she was like a second mother to our entire family, and her youngest daughter, Kristen, was our best friend. Kris was one of the few friends Jill and I shared equally and we spent a significant amount of time at one another's homes reading "Archie" comic books and eating Reese's peanut butter cups in the comfort of our sleeping bags. (Kris' father spoiled us rotten so we preferred our overnighters there.)
Sadly, life has a way of intervening as people grow and go their own ways. Regrettably, we lost touch along the journey, but even so, the loss of Ila feels profound, like a well-loved chapter that's forever closed. |
